A CRICKET JUNKIE CONFESSES
Saturday, August 11, 2007
Heard of the "Few Good Men"?For the uninitiated,I'm referring to the ESPNSTAR commentary team made up of Ian Chappell,Sunil Gavaskar,Ravi Shastri,Geoffery Boycott,Alan Wilkins and Harsha Bhogle.Add another to the list--Gautam Bhimani, the skinny fellow who does the job of pre-match/post-match/interim interviews.

Ever sat next to Sachin Tendulkar in a flight? Ever watched a match from atop floodlights? Ever captured the moments of a match from an adjacent high-rise building? Well, my (and many hardcore cricket freaks') answer to each of these questions is "No" but in the case of Gautam Bhimani,it's a matter of pride. He captures these and many such off-field moments in his book "Reverse Sweep".

Gautam resembles no more than a pencil, but he's got enough willpower to climb to the top of the world's tallest stadium-floodlight (@ the MCG,Melbourne) and capture the match from there. He has had the opportunity to cover a match from the high-rise building near the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka. He was the first to interview Anil Kumble after the latter played on, in the test against South Africa in 2001, the jaw injury notwithstanding.

The book has been structured in such a manner as to bring out highlights from all the cricketing nations. Surprisingly there's not a single chapter dedicated to India. However the book is interesting in that it carries plenty of photos (there is atleast one photo in every page). It also provides a few unknown facts about cricket stadiums. For instance, Basin Reserve in Wellington is actually a traffic island (roundtana) there. A must-read for diehard cricket buffs.
